The Heart Pillow Project, originated in the USA and was then developed in Europe (Sweden and Denmark) some ten years ago, to bring comfort / support to women suffering from breast cancer. This project aims to give these women free small heart-shaped pillows. These pillows will be placed under their armpit after the breast surgery. Beyond its symbolic heart shape, the pillow helps to ease post-operative pains and to reduce muscular aches (arm, shoulder and neck).

Marianne Emberland Johnsen is the leader of the group that started HPPS Stavanger in 2015, a local branch of the Swedish association Heart Pillow Project Sweden. As a former breast cancer patient, she decided after her recovery to commit herself to this project. Her association has produced 550 to 600 heart-shaped pillows last year and 450 pillows have been given out for free with the help of Stavanger University Hospital (SUS)

Although the commitment of Marianne and the members of her association is huge, she needs to rely on donations to be able to carry out her project. First, she needs financial support to be able to buy the raw materials such as fabric, threads and stuffing to complete the pillows. HHPS Stavanger depends solely on private funding from companies and individuals. The cost for making three pillows is about 200 Kr. Secondly, making the pillows requires some volunteers. Marianne can rely on the support of several local associations (several local branches of the Norwegian Women Public Health Association, and the Klepp Department of Refugee Service). The Refugee Service assists and supports refugees living in Norway. Through integration-oriented programme, refugee women assist HPPS Stavanger by making heart-shaped pillows. This not only gives them the opportunity to learn new skills such as sewing but also helps them to build cultural ties with their host community. They have for instance the opportunity to speak Norwegian with the locals but also to understand the significance of the Norwegian word “dugnad”, meaning voluntary work and which is a fundamental value in the Norwegian society. Another important goal of HPPS Stavanger is to raise awareness about breast cancer. Twice a year the voluntary workers have the possibility to visit of the radiotherapy department at SUS. Demonstrations of self-breast examination are be performed and information about the symptoms are be given. The visit ends with a tour of the hospital department that distributes the heart-shaped pillows to the patients

Cécile Boisseau Biezanowski, president of the French association in Stavanger – Stavanger Accueil – first met Marianne autumn 2017 during the HPPS Stavanger project presentation at the Stavanger Chamber of Commerce. Cécile was overwhelmed by the journey of these women fighting breast cancer and was touched by the generosity and the enthusiasm of Marianne who invests a lot of her time and energy for them. Cécile was also thrilled by the joint work between HHPS Stavanger and the women refugees. Therefore, she quickly suggested Marianne building a partnership between the two associations. Stavanger Accueil Sewing Club members immediately committed themselves to help cutting the fabric and sewing the heart-shaped covers. So for the second year, the dynamic « Club Couture » join the HPPS Stavanger Project. Thank you very much to Cécile, Myriam, Lénaick et Aurélie for their generosity !
